Rail authorities announced last week that they had converted two standard daytime trains—one from Kunming to Lijiang and one from Lijiang to Kunming—into "K" designated express trains.
The move will shave an hour and a half off the trip from Kunming to Lijiang and almost two hours in the other direction.
The new routes are the K9618/K9619 departing Kunming daily at 9:26am and arriving in Lijiang at 7:09pm, and the K9620/K9617 departing Lijiang at 10:19am and arriving in Kunming at 7:41pm.
The new express lines are more bad news for bus drivers who drive between Kunming and Lijiang. At least 20 drivers went on strike in May because passenger numbers had plummeted after rail service from Kunming to Lijiang started on January 1.
