About Lugu Lake

One of the province's most pristine lakes, Lugu and it's surrounding area are also the spiritual homeland of the Mosuo people. The lake straddles the border of Yunnan and Sichuan and is very deep, with its deepest point sitting 40 meters below the surface. It is flanked by the impressive escarpment Lion Mountain, the holiest place in Mosuo folklore. Boat rides are a common pastime for visitors, and are rowed by locals as no motorized traffic is allowed.

There is no other place I rather be. Yun Nan is very mysterious, no one would not like it if you been there. I fell in love with it after the first time I visit, and I am already can't wait to go back again.

My first trip to Lugu Lake was in 2007 and I've been back there several times in between. Surrounded by mountains and at a 2700 meter altitude it's clean, remote and with its own culture. It's a great destination when combining a Yunnan / Sichuan trip, as it's right on the border. On the Sichuan side, Xichang is the better known destination / starting point, while on the Yunnan side Lugu Lake connects well with Lijiang Old Town.
